Artist Statement

Flowers are an essential trait of our culture and history, an iconic symbol of femininity, strength, and a vital force for our planet’s health. My fascination for flowers comes from seeing them as an all-important factor in the carefully choreographed interactions between plants and nature’s creatures, evolving in their fight for time and giving beauty a new meaning. I spend hours capturing the perfect moment, unaware of anything outside my viewfinder. I use wind and other natural ingredients as props weaving together vibrant hues and textures to bring the natural world to life and provoke the observer to see past its beauty at the cascading effects of climate change. This immersive process helps me get inside the walls of these micro-realms, mirroring the natural beauty of my surroundings and the powerful bond we share.

CV & Education

Bio

Oana M. Bakovic (@Mrv23) is a contemporary fine art photographer with a predilection for the wild and endangered flora, peculiar plants, big bodies of water & motion.

She was born in the port city of Constanta, on the shores of the Black Sea, to a Croatian father and a Romanian mother. Always a passionate photographer, she started by documenting her family life tangential to her work as an advertising professional.

In 2020 Oana finally focused more on her art, identifying that her interest lies mainly in the natural world and refining the technique of using a flash with ambient light and sometimes ND filters. The camera of her choice is a Fuji X100V.

Things started moving in the right direction when she participated and won first prize in a local photography art contest. The winning photograph of old Morris Minor was much praised in the local art community, which gave her confidence to go further.

By 2022, following her win at The Sony World Photography Awards, Aesthetica Magazine wrote, ‘Bakovic offers a fresh take on floral photography. The results are almost alien, highlighting the natural world from the inside. Seemingly small plants become towering giants in front of Bakovic’s lens, rendered in rich and saturated colour palettes.’

Reviews

‘Romanian artist Oana Bakovic´ presents hyperreal depictions of flowers and plants. In the above image, bright purple petals stand out against an endless sea of lurid green stems. Taken from intriguing, low-down perspectives, Bakovic´ offers a fresh take on floral photography. The results are almost alien, highlighting the natural world from the inside. Seemingly small plants become towering giants in front of Bakovic´’s lens, rendered in rich and saturated colour palettes.’ - Aesthetica Magazine, 2022

'There is something playful, exciting and adventurous about how you are photographing these scenes. And there's no doubt that you are challenging the typical photography that is made of flowers and plants--your photographs feel fresh and contemporary.' - Lensculture, 2021

'My overall impression is that your work is very strong, well-formed and cohesive. It’s engaging, absorbing, and artful, and you exhibit a clear technical ability alongside adeptness for storytelling. It’s the type of work that has an immediate visual draw but then offers elements that slowly reveal themselves and linger, and that’s a powerful combination. It’s the type of work that I return to with anticipation.' - Life Framer, 2021 (AUR)
