This image is from an on-going research project called Deep Looking. I define this notion of looking deeply as the moment when memory and an external image collide to create a fantasy image in the mind. I access this moment by using a zoom lens on my iPhone to look into obscure and discrete areas of a photograph. As I scan the image, a momentary image appears that causes me to pause. In this pause, my memory activates what I see through the lens to create a fantasy image taken from the photograph. This fantasy image is generated from the photograph but is not a duplication of it. Recently, I've started working with old slides to capture these images. The slide media creates a dream-like quality which is a further enhancement to the fantasy image. This image is an example of working with slide media.
