Location: Online - Zoom

Do you struggle with artist statements and funding application forms? Do you think you know your practice - until you’re asked to write about it? Do the phrases you have been using to describe your work no longer feel right? If so, this is the workshop for you!

This September, artist/researcher Dr Katharine Fry and artist/curator Elly Clarke - who have taught as a team for the past two years at Goldsmiths - are offering two 3-hour practical workshops via Zoom with optional 1-to-1 Intensives:

Session 1: Writing Your Artist Statement, 10am-1pm on 23rd September 2022
Session 2: Filling in Funding Applications, 10am-1pm on on 30th September 2022

1-to1 Intensives will be bookable Monday to Friday from 26th September to 7th October 2022

Contemporary artists are frequently asked to produce writing about their work for use across a range of professional and creative contexts. Through these writing workshops, we will creatively, experimentally, critically and practically demystify key forms of artist writing: artist statements and biographies; funding applications and residency proposals.

Together we will unpack how to use style, tone, structure and genre to produce creative texts that represent your voice and your work. We will cut the waffle and ditch the jargon to get to the heart of what you’re trying to say.

Through group critical reading, we will edit texts for clarity, context and purpose, avoiding the pitfalls of ‘International Art English.’ During each workshop, you will be asked to carry out short writing tasks and collective reading, discussion and editing exercises - alone and as a group.

Please bring an artist statement of approx. 250 words along with images of 2 key works to develop in Session 1, and a draft funding application of a similar length for Session 2.
