Artist Statement
I have always been concerned with space, both within and around a form. I am attempting to express both centredness and dynamism within one abstract form. There is a tension between finding a clarity of line and underlying geometry, with the random surface marking from smoke-firing which is important to my creative process. I hope that each work will sit with poise and possess an enduring quietness and liveliness.
I aim to capture an essence or quality that may be perceived or implicitly sensed rather than articulated. I am attempting to express experiences of nature: listening to sounds of wind, water or silence; walking through landscape; touching the rocks; smelling the moorland peat or mosses near to my home in Yorkshire. I want to do this with simplicity, with a regard for the nature of my medium, so that when you look at a finished sculpture you might feel ‘yes, of course that is how it could be’.
Other influences: Ancient cultures, Mid 20th century sculpture, eg Epstein, Gill.
Career path After completing a Geography degree I trained at Harrow Art School in Studio Pottery. Before setting up the workshop I travelled in the Middle-East and India for one year, returning to London with a wealth of impressions and drawings. In 1985 I set up the first workshop, experimenting with smoke-firing. By 1989 I had moved to Sheffield where I currently live and work, continuing to explore new forms suitable for smoke-firing.
My work is represented in private and public collections throughout the UK, Europe, USA, Japan and China.
