Artist Statement

Amber Schormans is a photographer and recent graduate from Anglia Ruskin University, specialising in portrait and fashion photography. Recently creating her own magazine called Amber Magazine, she is interested in the positive and broad representation of women that is often lacking in the media and in an advertising context. Amber hopes to break the mould and provide a new wave of real and exciting fashion imagery that inspires women.

During my time as a freelance photographer I have taken on various jobs and roles that have influenced my contemporary ideas and increased my skill set.


These include:


•       Creating my own magazine, becoming the photographer, writer and editor. This involved balancing my time well with a lot of collaboration, research and work. Gaining valuable skills that include networking, time management, writing, social media and management.

•       Photographing the 2017 graduate fashion show. Working within a group of photographers we documented the day with back stage images along with the final show. Working in a fast-paced environment with often challenging and changing lighting scenarios.

•       Volunteer social media manager for Lux-Aura exhibition, our graduate exhibition which will be exhibited through Free Range at the Old Truman Brewery in London. This has taught me leadership skills and key focussed ways to promote through social media.

•       Photographing various designers work, collaborating with a variety of different creative people gave me an insight into professionalism in teams and reaching a positive, joint outcome with multiple influences.

•       Photographing a student night event at the Grand Arcade in Cambridge, my work was published widely over social media in promotion of the event. This gave me hands on experience in working within a busy environment in often low/difficult lighting scenarios.


May 2016 – Aug 2016             Checkout Assistant                Tesco, Great Notley


During a temporary summer job at Tesco I worked full time for four months with the general public every day. This broadened my already established communication skills, punctuality and attributes when working in team environments.

Duties included:

•       Providing excellent customer service while working on the tills and continuously interacting with lots of customers

•       Assisting customers when needed on the shop floor and being as helpful as possible

•       Working on the self-service tills, which not many new employees get trained to do



July 2013 – Aug 2015              Sales Assistant                      Next, Braintree


Providing service for customers for over two years and completing the full training. It was a very beneficial experience. Interacting with customers and fellow employees continued to boost my confidence levels and communication skills.


Duties included:

•       Providing excellent customer service contributing to being one of the best stores in the area and producing many mystery shop results above 80%

•       Promoting the company and getting above the recommended number of signatures for first time surfers, a form in which people sign up to get a Next account or recommend a friend to one

•       Working as part of a team with many colleagues to reach a shared goal of providing increased sales and excellent customer service

•       Helping to train new employees and teach them how to use systems such as the tills and HHT’s, which are handheld devices used to scan labels and manage the content on the shop floor and stock rooms

•       Serving and interacting with customers providing excellent customer service and answering any questions they may have

•       Arranging the window displays in a desirable and pleasing manor, and organising the book shelf in name order within a specific system

•       Pricing individual items due to type and worth

•       Keeping the shop floor tidy and organised, making sure everything is in place in an appealing manner

•       Adobe systems such as Photoshop, Bridge and Lightroom


Technical Skills:

•       Professional DSLR cameras and equipment such as lenses and tripods

•       Studio, portable and natural lighting

•       Studio equipment such as backdrops, props and wind machines


Social Media:

•       Managing and running three professional accounts for my photography, magazine and group exhibitions across multiple platforms, such as Instagram, Twitter and Facebook

2017 – Graduated from Anglia Ruskin University studying (BA) Hons Photography with a first class degree

2017 – Photographed Anglia Ruskin’s Graduate fashion show

Along with a team of photographers I volunteered to photograph the graduate fashion show, featuring back stage images in addition to the show


2017 – Created my own magazine and brand for University


2017 – Exhibited work with Richard Tooley at Anglia Ruskin University

My images for MA fashion student Annabelle Williams were featured in an exhibition for one month along with MA photography student Richard Tooley


2017 – In charge of the social media team to promote our Cambridge and London Lux-Aura exhibitions


2016 – Photographed MA fashion students final collection

This resulted in my work being exhibited in the degree show and on various websites and blogs      


2015/16 – Photographed for various emerging fashion designers on the undergraduate course

These include Rosie Flynn, Pooja Dhimmar and Pashelle Smith.


2016 – Awarded 3rd place in the Eaton portrait prize

My work was further exhibited and the prize was awarded at a successful awards night and exhibition opening


2015/16 – Photographing for known fashion bloggers


2015 – Photographed an MA fashion students final design for their degree show


2014/15 – Short listed for the Eaton portrait prize

Being in the top 10 resulted in my work being part of an exhibition


2014 – Two of my photographs were short listed in the top 50 for ‘The power of motion.’
