Artist Statement

I want to question how we relate to our rapidly changing world. We are bombarded by advertisements and propaganda images in the mass media, which manipulate us: to conform; to want; to think; to buy over-produced products and what to look like. There is a lack of humanity as are depersonalised and some would say made inhuman through this constant bombardment of images through all forms of media. There is a loss of personal contact and through this distance there is a misunderstanding in human relationships. This is occurring at all levels of human existence (intellectual, political, personal, media) and is producing widespread disorientation. Our perceptions of what is real and who we are is constantly being manipulated. In 1936 Walter Benjamin wrote in his seminal essay, “The work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction “The adjustment of reality to the masses and of the masses to reality is a process of unlimited scope, as much for thinking as for perception.” I feel that we are living in an unfamiliar, un-homely or “unhiemlich” and what Freud would contend to be an “uncanny” world. I am interested in using the techniques and images used in the production of mass media’s images to hopefully enable the viewer question these manipulations and then to laugh.
