This work presents the book 'Shadows and Enlightenment' by Michael Baxandall. My aim was to explore the act of looking and the philosophical question of knowledge. The lens becomes a viewing passage or threshold. I make reference to 'Republic VII' as Plato uses The Allegory of the Cave to illustrate crossing the threshold from the purely visible worlds into the intelligible word - seeing with knowledge and with consciousness.
The viewer can experience glimpses of the book, each double page only displayed for 3 seconds - the average time a viewr spends looking at a piece of artwork in a gallery.
