New Art Highlights of the week from Axisweb includes: Susan Banks, Charlie Warde, Cliff Crawford and Ewan Robertson.

Manifest One, 2018 by Susan Banks

Manifest One

The painting, loosely based on trompe l’oiel wall paintings of lararia from Pompeii and Herculaneum, alludes to apotropaic signs and the aesthetic of damage. Darkening with gold and crimson glazes increases the sense of a liminal and ambiguous space.

Deposition (Robin Hood Gardens), 2016-2017 by Charlie Warde

Charlie Warde

3D “Plastic Painting” of parts of the East Block of Robin Hood Gardens arranged onto 3 panels of solid landscape colours.

Each component of the building is recreated to scale using only artist pigments and acrylic mediums.

The composition is based on Ruben’s Decent From the Cross (Hermitage Museum); the scale conforms to Modernism’s preoccupation with the human scale - each panel measuring 2 foot 9 inches square, the distance between elbows of Vitruvian Man standing with his hands on his hips.

Robin Hood Gardens, designed by Peter and Alison Smithson, is controversially scheduled for demolition. This painting is one of a series documenting Brutalism’s condemned heritage.

Groyne 60 - Photographed from 2002 to 2017, 2018 by Cliff Crawford

Cliff Crawford

A single post top from Groyne 60 that I have photographed from 2002 to 2017.

The post tops, like portraits of a person repeated throughout their life, are not only beautiful but provide clues as to the condition of the system.
