New Art Highlights

11 - 17 September 2017

New Art Highlights of the week from Axisweb includes: Lisa Scantlebury, Colin Lindsay, Bryan Eccleshall and Fiona Stanbury

Jugpack, 2017 by Lisa Scantlebury

Jugpack 2017, Lisa Scantlebury

Referencing and inspired by the works of Czech graphic artist, ceramist, sculptor and poet Nadežda Plíšková (1934 - 1999)

There isn’t a lot written about her so I wanted to gain knowledge of the processes she would have taken first hand.

These jugpacks that I have made are to aid my research for a written extended essay, their function is about the writing rather than the object, as a means to understanding the process and what it means for me to be a ‘Potter’.

As a multi-disciplinary artist, Plíšková has inspired my interest in Pottery and desire to explore its function further.

Still Rivers, 2011 by Colin Lindsay

Still Rivers, Colin Lindsay

The sculpture makes specific reference to ‘Equivalent VIII’ by Carl Andre. Andre used commercially available firebricks; I wanted to infect the rigour and austerity of Andre’s minimalism with something else.

The 120 blocks are individually hand cast and vitally, the concrete was mixed using water specially collected from rivers around the country. (Nith, Tweed, Carron, Forth, Clyde, Tay, Earn, Tilt, Spey, Ness, Coe, Don, Deveron, Thurso).

Digital Rain, 2017 by Bryan Eccleshall

Digital Rain, Bryan Eccleshall

An ongoing collection of collages made in Photoshop suing source images found online or made by me. The work is loosely concerned with migration, war, sci-fi, Beyoncé, art and art history, ideology, picture-making, propaganda, jellyfish, and so on.

Images contradict one another and should be read as part of a complex whole and not as stand-alone pieces.
