Social Works? Open launch event, Site Gallery, November 2018
Social Art Library—an Axis project, in conjunction with Social Art Network—is delighted to announce 12 new art writing bursaries for Spring 2021.
In 2018, we launched the first edition of Social Works? Open, a journal dedicated to social practice art, as part of our action research ‘Models of Validation’ (with Manchester Metropolitan University, 2018-20) which showed that the field of socially-engaged practice lacks a platform for critical dialogue.
In 2021, we will publish the long-awaited second issue of the journal, which will be distributed in both print and digital formats. We will be commissioning five texts of no more than 2000 words and five short texts of no more than 600 words. We will also commission two word-image contributions (e.g. comic strip, ‘zine, photo essay).
Proposals are invited from anyone involved in social practice art, including (but not limited to) artists, participants, producers, commissioners and researchers.
Long text = £500
Shorter text = £120
Word-image commission = £500
To apply, please send abstracts of no more than 200 words, indicating which bursary you wish to apply for, alongside a short sample of previous writing or (for the word-image commission) an example of your word-image work, using the online form here. If you have any access requirements, please don’t hesitate to get in touch at [email protected].
We welcome submissions on any topic pertaining to social practice, but would be especially interested to receive proposals that address any of the following:
Social practice and social distancing - how have social practice artists adapted their practice / risen to the challenges posed by Covid-19
Diversity and equality and the ongoing legacy of the Black Lives Matter movement
Documenting and archiving social practice - what are the challenges, innovations, contexts of recording and sharing the stories of social art projects
Social practice in museums and galleries - (how) can non-object-based practices be represented in mainstream art spaces?
Please also feel free to send any questions to [email protected].
The deadline for applications is midnight on 18th January 2021. Successful applicants will be expected to submit their completed contributions by 15 March 2021.
