Can I buy the video please?

When we curated the stand for our Arts Projects space at London Art Fair we wanted to show a cross-section of work from the Axisweb directory. The directory is bursting at the seams with talent and the Art Fair is a great way to show it in the flesh.

Selling the work is, of course, important in this context and the work was selected with this in mind. However I think it would be fair to say that the success of Hanae Utamura’s ‘Wiping the Sahara Desert’ has taken both the artist, and us, by surprise.

Conversations at the London Art Fair

To state the obvious, one of the good things about having an art fair stand is the enforced leisure. You really can’t do very much except talk to people. And for us, so far, that has been a real pleasure.

Florin Ungureanu, Lost Memories, 2011

Yesterday we spent a lot of time in conversation with the artists who have work on the Axis stand. I was intrigued to hear about Florin Ungureanu’s education in Ceauşescu’s Romania, David Webb’s passion for colour, Canadian Trevor Kiernander’s experience of living in London, Will Woon’s interest in Gothic architecture and the propensity of caretakers at the Slade to dispatch anything vaguely resembling scrap material to the rubbish bins, as Sonke Faltien discovered to his cost while doing a BA there.

What’s in a name?

Here at Axis we’re thinking hard about our new visual identity, which we’ll be launching alongside our new web platform in the early part of next year. One of the things we’re also pondering is what we call ourselves.

In general, we’re somewhat dubious about the wisdom of re-brands. Remember Consignia, the disastrous re-branding of our much-loved Royal Mail? We certainly don’t want to go down that route. So, whatever happens, we won’t be calling ourselves something completely different.

Developing audiences for contemporary art – the latest digital tools from Axis

It’s been a busy couple of weeks at Axis, with two new iPhone apps arriving in the iTunes store and websites for Ways of Looking and All Points North going live.

Followers of Axis will know that as well as promoting artists and provoking debate about contemporary art, we also build web platforms and create new digital products. Recently, this has led to some exciting new developments, among them a website and iPhone app for Art in Yorkshire – supported by Tate.

The selection has taken place and I can now reveal that we have appointed digital agency fuse8 to develop the new Axis web platform.

Their proposal was brimming with ideas for how Axis can be developed. Suggesting ways to improve the design and let the artwork stand out, alongside simplifying navigation. They also have some inspiring ideas for technical features that will make the Axis website a much more engaging and enjoyable place to be.

So I know I promised to keep you updated about our new developments at Axis – and then went quiet! This is mainly because all these things take a little time and we’ve not quite reached the exciting decision stages – we’re still doing the behind-the-scenes foundation work.

We’ve got a few visual identity ideas that we’re mulling over but the bulk of work we’ve been doing recently has been focused on appointing a digital agency to help us create the new Axis web platform.

The new Axis

I’m fresh back from maternity leave at a really exciting time for Axis – it’s great to be back and have a huge project to get my teeth into.

Spurred on by the news that we’ve made it and have ACE’s NPO status, the time is right to redevelop and redesign Axis. Our plan so far – to launch a new web platform in 2012.

But where to start? We’ve been discussing and planning for a while, backed up by a whole load of audience research so we’re doing well with producing a detailed specification for what the new Axis will be…
