On Thursday I succumbed to temptation and lost my Frieze virginity. It was becoming a little embarrassing (how old? and you’ve never been? what’s wrong with you?) but I now feel like I’ve gone through a rite of passage. So how was it? I’m not sure to be honest, it was all a blur. I expected to see lots of art, I did, but don’t ask me what it was, I was moving so quickly trying to see everything in one day – but hey I’m new to this.

I tell a lie, I do remember some art. Perhaps it was just me but I found a mathematical theme in lots of work. Now I may be remembering my A-Level mathematics wrongly, but I’m sure there is something called Frieze patterns which are about isometries (a distance-preserving function between metric spaces). Frieze patterns can be quite simple. However adding to the equation you observe more complexity with the potential of finding more attractive patterns – I think this description works well for Frieze.
A quick word about the toilets, they lived up to the glamour and luxury of the event. If you find a finer portable loo, let me know!
